Vishay Introduces High-Power 200 W Thick Film Resistor in SOT-227B Package with Optional Thermal Management Features
Vishay Intertechnology, a global leader in discrete semiconductors and passive electronic components, has announced the release of a new AEC-Q200 qualified thick film power resistor housed in the compact and low-profile SOT-227B package, specifically designed for mounting on a heatsink. The Vishay MCB ISOA200 offers exceptional performance characteristics, including high pulse handling capability and high power dissipation of up to 200 W when the bottom case temperature is maintained at 80 °C. Notably, the ISOA200 is available with an optional integrated NTC thermistor for internal temperature monitoring, as well as an optional pre-applied Phase Change Thermal Interface Material (PC-TIM) to facilitate more efficient and reliable mounting to a heatsink.
A key innovation of the ISOA200 is its construction on an exposed alumina substrate, a departure from traditional designs that utilize a metal tab. This design choice results in both lower costs and reduced weight, making the ISOA200 an ideal solution for a wide range of demanding applications across the automotive, industrial, avionics, military, and space (AMS) sectors. In these applications, the resistor can serve various critical functions, including precharge, discharge, active discharge, or snubber resistor duties. For applications that are subjected to high and repetitive pulse surges, the ISOA200 exhibits impressive robustness, capable of handling high-energy pulses up to 140 J for a duration of 0.1 seconds and has undergone rigorous multi-pulse testing to ensure reliable performance under such conditions. Furthermore, Vishay MCB offers additional custom testing options for the device to meet specific application requirements.
The option to integrate an AEC-Q200 qualified NTC thermistor, which has been subjected to thorough temperature cycle testing, directly inside the resistor package of the ISOA200 provides significant benefits for circuit design. It simplifies designs by eliminating the need for external temperature sensing components and saves valuable board space. Moreover, the availability of pre-applied PC-TIM streamlines the installation process during production, ensuring efficient thermal contact with the heatsink and enhancing overall reliability. The ISOA200's high power and high energy dissipation capabilities further simplify designs and contribute to lower overall system costs by potentially reducing the number of power components required.
The Vishay MCB ISOA200 features a broad resistance range spanning from 10 Ω to 1 MΩ, with tight tolerance options of ± 5 % and ± 10 %. The Temperature Coefficient of Resistance (TCR) is available in ± 100 ppm/K and ± 150 ppm/K, ensuring stable resistance values over the operating temperature range. The resistor offers a maximum operating voltage of 1500 V, an operating temperature range from -55 °C to +150 °C, and a high dielectric strength of 4000 Vrms, providing robust performance in demanding electrical environments. The device is fully compliant with RoHS environmental regulations, features a non-inductive design to minimize unwanted inductive effects in high-frequency applications, and can be configured to include two different resistor elements within the same package for increased design flexibility. Samples and production quantities of the new ISOA200 power resistor are available now, with standard lead times of 12 weeks.
